Day 1 - Cutting Edge 1 & 2

First off, I’m going to be slightly controversial: I’m not a big fan of the Cutting Edge albums. What I’ve always liked about Delirious?’s songs is that they combine a good message in the lyrics with brilliant music, and I can’t help but feel that compared to some later albums, the Cutting Edge ones just seem a little… predictable. Don’t get me wrong: there are some truly excellent songs on there, Happy Song and I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever being the highlights, but overall many of the songs are not particularly memorable and rather samey.
Now, with that rant out of the way, I’m going to contradict almost every point I made in the previous paragraph by saying that this is an album that everyone with even the slightest interest in Delirious? should listen to. Yes, it may lack the musical quality of some of the later albums, but that’s only to be expected when you remember that this album was recorded long before the band took the name ‘Delirious?’ and went full-time. As a first album for what at the time was technically an amateur band it is a brilliant effort and I find it amazing that 15 years later, Happy Song and I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever are still two of Delirious?’s best known songs and firm favourites with fans.

Looking back at what I’ve written I can’t help but feel that I haven’t got the message across that I meant to. It isn’t that I think the Cutting Edge albums are bad, I just don’t enjoy them as much as Delirious?’s other albums. Hope I haven’t upset anyone! ;-)
I’ll be doing Cutting Edge 3 & Fore tomorrow – I’ll try to write more about the actual songs than my opinions then, promise!

Welcome to the beginning of the end

Hello all. If you're reading this you probably know that in a few short weeks Delirious?, arguably the best Christian band ever, are breaking up. In the days leading up to their final gig, I am going to be listening to all of their albums, from Cutting Edge 1 to My Soul Sings, and writing a bit about each one. I will start with Cutting Edge 1 & 2 later toady, hopefully reaching My Soul Sings on the day before the final gig. Enjoy...
